Transport
If you are travelling from abroad to take part in an Icelandic course in Ísafjörður, it is likely that you need to stay one night in Reykjavík before coming to Ísafjörður, and one night after the course finishes, before flying home. Please note that transportation is not included in the prices of the courses.
International Flights
If you are making travel arrangements from abroad there are several airlines flying to Iceland. All of them arrive at Keflavik International Airport. The international airport is located approximitely 50 km away from Reykjavík, capital of Iceland.
Airport shuttle Keflavik - Reykjavík
You can travel by coach/bus to and from Keflavik Airport. The trip from the airport terminal to Reykjavík downtown takes approximately 45 minutes. You can buy the tickets and find further details on the websites of the coach/bus companies.
Domestic flight from Reykjavík to Ísafjörður
There are normally two scheduled flights daily between Reykjavík and Ísafjörður. They can be booked online at www.icelandair.com . Flights leave from Reykjavík domestic airport, not from Keflavík airport. Once you arrive in Ísafjörður, you can take the FlyBus from the airport directly to your final destination in Ísafjörður town for ISK 1.000. The bus to Ísafjörður waits outside the airport after every landed flight.

Please follow the Visit Westfjords Official Travel Guide website for information about the bus timetable. Please get confirmed timings before making plans.
Rental car
You can also book a rental car directly from Keflavik and drive all the way to Ísafjörður. There are two ways to drive here. From Reykjavík to Ísafjörður via roads 60 and 61 along the east route of the Westfjords, 455 km paved road. Or via road 60 along the south-west route, 438 km, in parts unpaved. We advise you to plan in enough time! Maximum speed in Iceland 90 km/h – speeding tickets in Iceland are costly so keep your eyes open for speed limit signs. According to Icelandic law everyone must wear a seatbelt regardless of where seated in the car. Headlights are required around the clock, while driving. Driving off-road is forbidden! The number in Iceland to call for in case of an emergency is 112.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not a part of the language courses and not included in the price. Students are responsible for finding their own accommodation. Below you can see the different types of accomodation Ísafjörður and the surrounding area has to offer.
UW's student housing
UW’s student housing was built in 2023 to meet the growing demand for housing in Ísafjörður. There are 40 studio apartments in four wings and two separate buildings that are located next to each other. Language students can contact studentagardar@uw.is to check availability, price, location and so forth for the student housing.
Accomodation options
At Visit Westfjords, language students can find an overview of the different accomodation options in Ísafjörður and surrounding area. Options listed there include hotels, bed & breakfast, sleeping bag accomodation, guesthouses, cottages and camping.
It is also possible to look for accomodation on booking.com and airbnb.com. Additionally, there is a Facebook group called Húsnæði Til leigu/Sölu Ísafjörður og nágrenni where people request or offer accomodation in Ísafjörður and the surrounding area.
