Kl. 17:00, Maik Brötzmann
Arctic and Subarctic Gateways for Private Nautical Tourism: A Feasibility Study for a Marina Development in Ísafjörður, Iceland

Úrdráttur
Private nautical tourism in arctic and subarctic settings has been generally neglected in polar tourism studies. This thesis draws attention towards private nautical tourism as a viable economic supplement and alternative form of tourism for rural coastal communities. Understanding this opportunity, its economic and management implications, and its users' characteristics are the core of this research. The study covers basic concepts and provides a feasibility assessment for marina development via SWOT analysis for a gateway functioning community in the secluded Westfjords of Iceland. Research data are compiled from secondary sources, interviews, questionnaires and a synthesis of related scientific articles, industry and policy documents, media publications, and baseline information. The case study confirms the conditional economic feasibility of private nautical tourism developments in high-latitude gateway locations and reveals users as adventure-seeking, authenticity-driven and environmentally-motivated. It is concluded that marina-oriented developments meeting certain conditions can be beneficial to remote rural arctic and subarctic communities in diverse ways. However, because of short and unpredictable seasons and changing user volumes, private sector marinas must be integrated with other business in the community to be profitable.

Studies based on a standardized approach to examine the quantity of marine debris are lacking at many locations, including Iceland. In the present study, 26 transects were established on six different bays in the north, west and south of the nature reserve Hornstrandir in Iceland, following the standardized approach developed by the OSPAR Commission. Results showed that 95.4% of all debris items consisted of plastic. On average, 104 debris items were found in 100 x 10 m transects with an average weight of 10.4 kg. Based on those findings it was calculated that approximately 32,600 litter items, having a weight of approximately 4300 kg are polluting the north, south and west of the nature reserve Hornstrandir. Indicator items were used to trace industrial origins of debris, identifying the fishing industry as the main contributor to the pollution. Labels and types of fishing gear found, indicated that the major proportion of marine debris was coming from Icelandic industries. Management recommendations are based on the analysis of effective management practices in other countries and the circumstances in Iceland. As a result, enforcement of the use of biodegradable fishing gear is seen as the best long-term solution. Additional measures like gear marking and deposit systems, improvement of port reception facilities, education and beach cleanups are also recommended.

Kl. 16.00, Daniel Metzger
Iceland's Energy Future: Identifying and Analyzing the Risks and Opportunities Presented by the Dreki Area

Úrdráttur
Exploration of oil and gas reserves on Iceland's continental shelf is currently underway, particularly concentrated in the Northeast's Dreki area. This study systematically analyzes ecological, economic and legislative baselines in order to present managers with a nuanced understanding of the risks and opportunities associated with developing the area. This study uses document analysis and stakeholder interviews to integrate original ethnographic data with existing secondary literature. Respondents identify what they view as the most important and divisive questions concerning exploiting the Dreki area's resources. Discussions of the area reveal broader concerns regarding Iceland's future as a producer of non-renewable energy, perceived regional inequities within the nation, and the impact of the international community on decision-making within Iceland.

In situ optical monitoring of Pyrodinium bahamense in Palawan, Philippines

Úrdráttur

Pyrodinium bahamense, a toxic dinoflagellate, is the leading cause of "red tide" algal blooms in the Philippines. Current monitoring practices do not address the need for an early warning system, due to the high costs and expertise required in the implentation of available methods. The feasibility of an inexpensive and simple method for monitoring HABs was examined. The approach was based on analysis of colour, derived from in situ digital images, supplemented by basic environmental measurements - salinity, temperature, and light intensity. The influence of these parameters on growth - and thus the ability to predict a bloom - was explored, alongside the notion that P. bahamense should alter the colour balance of a water body, indicating the initiation of a bloom. Colour was analyzed in respect to the three basic components of a digital image: Red, green, and blue. Three bodies of water and three rivers surrounding the island of Palawan, Philippines were examined. The colour balance was consistent in most cases, and a unique colour composition was found for each location. Light intensity readings were always within the optimal growth range for P. bahamense, and the same is true for salinity with one exception. Temperature was too high 36% of the time, but 34% of these results exceeded the optimal range by only 1°Ce, and samples were taken at the surface. Thus, the environmental parameters examined seemed consistently within the optimal range for P. bahamense growth. In situ optical monitoring results were encouraging, but inconclusive due to the lack of a P. bahamense bloom occurance during study.

Rikab Rajuuden, kl. 17.00

Expansion of Lophius piscatorius distribution in Iceland: Exploring the Ecological and Economic Viability for Establishing Sustainable Monkfish Fisheries in Northwestern Iceland

Úrdráttur

Global climate change has had profound impacts on marine ecosystems by altering physical parameters such as: ocean temperature; salinity; and hydrographic features, which largely govern species richness and distribution of fish populations. In Iceland, climate change has induced northwest expansion of monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) distribution; enhancing unintended consequences which affect fisheries management under the ITQ system. This study examined the impacts of three broadly-defined regions (Northwest region, South region, and East region) collectively and individually by its constituent ports on annual monkfish landings from 1999-2012, proportion of exclusively caught versus by-caught monkfish from 1999-2012, and trends in fishing company ownership from 2002-2012. It analyzed weaknesses in monkfish management and the ITQ system while providing amendments that resolve contemporary issues marginalizing fishing-dependent communities. The study sought to provide evidence supporting the need to establish monkfish fisheries in the northwest region of Iceland. Since 1999, the South region has accounted for 47.2% (12,134 t) of monkfish landings in Iceland, while the Northwest region has accounted for 41.3% (10,607 t) of total monkfish landings. In the same time period, 42.9% of South region landings were identified as by-catch in the lumpfish season, while only 33.1% of Northwest region landings were caught as by-catch. Since 2008, the Northwest region has demonstrated greater contribution to annual monkfish landings than the South region with a 359% increase in average annual monkfish catch per port and 357.1% increase in regional contribution to annual average monkfish catch. This study indicates tremendous growth in both overall and port landings for the Northwest region; however, fishing company ownership has remained low and stagnant. Improvements to monkfish management include resolving information gaps; application of population dynamic modeling; and gear modifications. Recommendations for the amendment of the ITQ system are posited: cost recovery scheme; resource rental strategy; and quota recovery and re-distribution in support of the establishment of owned and operated monkfish fisheries in the Northwest region of Iceland.

Fish supply, however, lags behind owing to declining natural fish stocks. Aquaculture production in Kenya is still insignificant on a global scale, not following the rapid growth of the sector especially in developing countries. Kenya shows great potential for aquaculture activities that are not yet fully explored. In 2009 the development and commercialization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) aquaculture became part of the government's Economic Stimulus Programme, aiming to stimulate the growth of the Kenyan economy by creating business opportunities and jobs. Aquaculture production in Kenya increased significantly. It can contribute to food security and poverty alleviation by providing high-quality protein and creating jobs and income. These are important attributes for Kenya where poverty and food insecurity are prevalent. This study uses a series of semi-structured questionnaires to elucidate the impacts of small-scale aquaculture on the livelihoods of farmers in the Nyanza and Western Provinces, Kenya. Foci are (1) farm characteristics, (2) support mechanisms used, (3) fish farm wealth, (4) livelihood changes and (5) future perspectives of aquaculture. Outcomes show that livelihoods and nutritional situation have improved since the introduction of aquaculture, mainly through the generation of income. Overall income creation from aquaculture is best for farmers receiving governmental support. Since support is temporally terminated, more work needs to be done for aquaculture to continue successfully in the future. Stressed is the increased integration of aquaculture in other farming activities to promote cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability.

Úrdráttur fyrir The impact of visitor disturbance on breeding Eider (Somateria mollissima) populations at Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve: Implications for management

Managing the conflicts that occur between humans and wildlife is one of the primary concerns of reserve managers. As recreational use of the countryside increases, improving our understanding of disturbance impacts is vital in order to limit damage and to inform management of access on reserves. The aim of this study is to provide scientific advice to inform the management of visitors to Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve, Iceland. This study first investigates how the reserve is used by humans and the study species, common eider (Somateria mollissima). An experimental method is then used to establish Alert Distance and Flight Initiation Distance for incubating eiders. Historical data was also analysed to show longterm trends. These data were then used to estimate the potential impacts of disturbance under current management and advise future management. Nest distribution across the reserve was varied with a concentration in less disturbed areas and around the reserve's one fresh water source; historical data implies that distribution has changed over time. Results indicated that eiders at this stage of breeding are not very sensitive to disturbance with a maximum alert distance of 5.2m and 45% of birds showing no response. Sensitivity was found to be higher in less disturbed areas. The main conclusion of this paper is that, under current management, visitor disturbance is not likely to have a significant impact on incubating eiders on Dyrhólaey. Recommendations include the maintenance of buffer zones around key breeding areas and resources, encouragement of responsible access, and implementation of a monitoring program.
