Avalanche Research Centre
The Avalanche Research Centre of the Icelandic Meteorological Office is based in Ísafjörður. The centre has six employees who conduct avalanche research for the whole country and provide tailored avalanche crisis services. The centre monitors and documents avalanches; and also conducts risk assessments and research. It is the country's top avalanche advisory to business and the public sector. The centre is situated in the Vestrahús/University Centre building in Ísafjörður.
Icelandic Centre for Ethnology and Folklore
ICEF is an institute which conducts research and collects knowledge on Folklore and related fields of study, both in Iceland and abroad. Within the framework of ICEF's research and dissemination, research projects are actively being carried out on the subject of folklore; as well as various scholarly, cultural and artistic co-operative projects with others. ICEF is situated in Hólmavík.
Kerecis
Kerecis is an innovation company that has established a research- and development department at the innovation centre based in the Vestrahús Building/University Centre in Ísafjörður. The company is preparing to move to its own facilities in Ísafjörður. Kerecis produces a marine-derived tissue regeneration product.
Marine Research Institute
The Marine Research Institute branch in the Westfjords is based in the Vestrahús Building/University Centre in Ísafjörður. Seven employees work at the branch, mainly focusing on fishing gear and fishing technology. Instead of finding better nets and meshes, the research of the local branch has focused largely on finding methods that take into account the behaviour of fish species.
Matís - Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D
Three staff members have been at the Matís branch in Ísafjörður. They mostly conducted research related to cod aquaculture. The branch is based in the Vestrahús Building/University Centre in Ísafjörður, but is currently being reorganised.
Medieval Westfjords
Medieval Westfjords is a co-operative network of institutions in the Westfjords and Reykjavík on medieval research in the Westfjords. The network has supported a summer school in archaeology at Reykjanes (Ísafjarðardjúp) and has held lectures, symposia and conferences on the subject.
Strandagaldur
Strandagaldur has built up exhibitions and museums at three locations in the Strandir area of the Westfjords on the history and heritage of witchcraft and sorcery in Iceland; and especially the Westfjords. These exhibitions and museums required a great deal of research and call for even more ongoing research into folklore in Iceland - both past and present.
The Arctic Fox Centre
The Arctic Fox Centre is a non-profit research and exhibition centre, focusing on the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) - the only truly native land mammal in Iceland. It opened in the village of Súðavík in the Westfjords in 2010. The long-term aim of the centre is to collect all available knowledge and material relevant to the arctic fox; past and present. The centre emphasises biological research on the Icelandic arctic fox and on developing sustainable wildlife tourism.
The Multicultural Centre of Iceland
The Multicultural Centre has the fundamental role of facilitating communications between individuals from different backgrounds, and enhancing the services provided to foreign citizens residing in Iceland, and to those interested in moving to Iceland. The Centre has held a symposium on immigrant issues in Iceland and an original web-symposium on the same issues. The Multicultural Centre is a national institution based in the Vestrahús Building/University Centre in Ísafjörður.
University of Iceland Research Centre
The role of the University of Iceland Research Centre is to enhance the University of Iceland's research activities in the Westfjords, in co-operation with other research institutes and universities. The centre is especially involved in research into nature, the economy and the cultural history of the Westfjords, with an emphasis on tourism. The Research Centre has had several full-time research students and is situated in Bolungarvík.
Westfjords Forestry
Westfjords Forestry is part of regional network around Iceland that aims to create a valuable forest resource in Iceland, by growing woodland and hedgerows with multiple utilisation options. It also aims to add to job opportunities in the field of forestry. As part of this goal, Westfjords Forestry is involved in research projects and employs two staff members. It is headquartered in Þingeyri.
Westfjords Heritage
The role of Westfjords Heritage is overall guardianship of antiquities in the Westfjords. The society endeavours to link together co-operation with institutions, companies and others that are involved in the preservation and discovery of historic relics in the region. Westfjords Heritage is a part of NABO (North Atlantic Biocultural Organisation), an umbrella organisation of numerous research institutes and universities.
Westfjords Natural History Institute
Westfjords Natural History institute is a regional institute in natural history. The main aim of the institute is to collect information about natural history in Westfjords and to make the information available. It opened in 1997 and is based in Bolungarvík, Hólmavík and Bíldudalur; covering the entire Westfjords region. Westfjords Natural History Institute provides municipalities, institutions and businesses with services in its field.
