The Icelandic Field School from the University of Manitoba is visiting the University Centre of the Westfjords for the fifth time this year. The group will stay at the University Centre this week, studying Icelandic language and culture. The students are reading various Icelandic literature, for example Svartfugl by Gunnar Gunnarsson and the medieval Gísla Saga. The Field School is taught by Dr. Birna Bjarnadóttir and Peter John Buchan, faculty members at the Icelandic Department but various guest lecturers also join in.

This year the Icelandic Department at the University of Manitoba is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a series of cultural events. For example a new composition by composer Matthew Patton will be premiered later this year in Manitoba. Mr. Patton joined the Icelandic Field School this year and is currently working on the composition with some Icelandic musicians.

When leaving the Westfjords the group will head to the north of Iceland and later on to the east and finally stay in Reykjavík before returning to Canada.
