Classroom in Ísafjöður

These days, students from Ísafjörður and Akureyri attend the same course in Law of the Sea. The students are from two international masters programs, Polar Law at the University of Akureyri and the Coastal and Marine Management at the University Centre of the Westfjords.

The course started January 9, and the first week was taught at the University of Akureyri. The second week is taught in Ísafjörður, and now there are 12 students from the University of Akureyri, as well as teachers and program manager, present in Ísafjörður.

The students host each other and the chairman of the CMM student community Ægir, Daniel Metzger, has been in charge of finding accommodation for everybody.

Professor Peter Orebech
Professor Peter Orebech
The instructor of this course is Peter Orebech, a professor of Law of the Sea at the University of Tromsö in Norway. Peter has become quite engaged on matters related to international affairs of Iceland, for example, mackerel fishing and even the Icesave dispute. In the current week the course will be focusing on fishing rights.

It will be exciting to see how this arrangement will turn out, as it is important to keep eyes open for opportunities in cooperation within the net of Icelandic universities.

The University Centre of the Westfjords welcomes their guests from Akureyri and hopes they will have a enjoyable stay here.

Our community

"The students here are happy, very open and welcoming. They are an international and eclectic student body - with lots of variety. They invited me to join them for meals and trips. I appreciated their openness as colleagues."
John Nyboer CMM Instructor, Research Associate Simon Fraser University Vancouver, Canada
