Friday August 21, Brad Barr will give a lecture which he calls Ocean Wilderness in Theory and Practice. In his talk Mr. Barr will discuss his current research, being conducted at the University of Alaska, regarding the application of the concept of "wilderness" to the oceans. Topics will include:

• What is ocean wilderness?
• How is wilderness preserved around the globe, and how much of what has been preserved in in the ocean?
• How might ocean wilderness be managed?
• Using ocean wilderness to preserve indigenous cultural heritage.
• The future of ocean wilderness.

Brad Barr is a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Director of the US National Marine Sanctuary Program and a PhD candidate at the University of Alaska. He serves on the Board of Directors for the George Wright Society, the Coastal Zone Canada Association, the Science and Management of Protected Areas Association, and is a member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas.

The lecture is open to the public and starts at 12.10 in the Cafeteria of the University Centre and will be around 45 minutes.
