Can Tidal Energy Harnessing Solve the Dispute of Road 60?

Possible road beds and crossings.
Possible road beds and crossings.
Yesterday evening the News Network Stöð 2 in Iceland interviewed Mr. Bjarn M. Jónsson, a graduate from the Coastal and Marine Management program, about his thesis on harnessing tidal energy in the southern Westfjords. Bjarni presented his project to a board of twenty officials and specialists, appointed by the Minster of the Interior. The board has the goal to find a solution for an ongoing dispute about where a new road on the south coast of the Westfjords should be built (Road 60). In his thesis Bjarni's discusses the idea to combine the road crossing over three fjords with a tidal power plant.

The news piece can be found on the website visir.is along with the TV interview, both in Icelandic.

Bjarni's thesis is also available on our Student Theses site along with all other master's theses produced by CMM students.

"Iceland is a place where the four elements seem to be engaged in a constant battle for dominance over the lives of its inhabitants. This provides an exciting, if sometimes demanding, backdrop to the CMM programme. It's hard to imagine an environment better suited to preparing students for the challenges of a career in natural resource management."

Alan Deverell, Great Britain, CMM student 2009-2010
