A new current the, North Icelandic Jet discovered by Coastal and Marine Management professor Steíngrímur Jónsson and his colleague Héðinn Valdimarsson at the Marine Research Institute of Iceland, has raised attention in the international scientific world. The current has been measured and mapped by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in cooperation with the Marine Institute of Iceland. This deep-reaching ocean circulation system north of Iceland could significantly influence the ocean's response to climate change in previously unforeseen ways.

The findings of the research team were published on August 21 in the online issue of the journal Nature Geoscience and has since then been reported widely in the media.

The Woods Hole research ship Knorr, departed from Reykjavík on Monday to continue its research of the current in cooperation with researchers from the Marine Research Institute. The expedition has a website where further information can be obtained and the process followed.
