Námskeiðslýsing
The course will introduce the concepts, principles, approaches, processes and issues of integrated coastal and ocean management through a review of ICM history and development within a global context. The "coast", as the focus of study, will be described. An overview of different management strategies, as well as the meaning of integration in the governing of natural resources, will be presented. Country case studies will be presented and examined. Successes and failures of integrated coastal and ocean management will be discussed.
Hæfniviðmið
  • Students will gain an understanding of Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management as a field of knowledge, based on its history and most recent developments.
  • Students will appreciate the complexity of coastal and marine management.
  • Students will be able to integrate different aspects of ICM, from a social, economical and ecological perspective, to assess problems and issues.
  • Students will be capable of applying their understanding and interpretation of coastal areas to design integrated management plans to approach coastal and marine issues.
Námsmat
Student's final grade will be based on class participation, exercises and discussions (25%); annotated bibliography assignment (30%); and 45% will be based on a group assignment work on a local case study and a final presentation (details and description of the case study group assignment will be given during class).
Kennari
Rodrigo Menafra (Uruguay) holds a BSc degree in Marine Biology and Ecology from the Florida Institute of Technology (Melbourne, FL, USA) and a master´s degree in Marine Management from the Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS, Canada). He has been involved in Integrated Coastal Management for ten years, having participated in various interdisciplinary research projects, with an emphasis on coastal policy, protected areas and artisanal fisheries. His academic interests derives from his experience as Assistant Coordinator and faculty member in the master's program on Integrated Coastal Management at the University of the Republic of Uruguay, having contributed to the development of the program through technical and administrative roles as well as teaching responsibilities. He edited the book "Basis for the conservation and management of the Uruguayan coastal zone", the first comprehensive compilation of coastal research in Uruguay. He currently lives in Halifax, Canada, and works as the Marine Conservation Coordinator for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, a non-governmental environmental organization.
