Description
The course aims to provide a critical foundation for understanding the history, current status and future of maritime transport system in a wider range with a particular emphasis on the Arctic. It is divided into two separate modules:Module 1 (7 days) aims to provide a critical foundation for understanding the economics and management of maritime transport in a wider range. It is expected to lay out basic knowledge of the maritime industry by explaining and discussing the following topics: various shipping modes, main actors in maritime transport, shipping and port organizations and maritime logistics system, emerging issues and future challenges in maritime transport, especially regarding Trans-Arctic maritime transport.
Module 2 (8 days) provides a critical foundation for understanding maritime transport in the Arctic region - a region comprising much of Inuit traditional homeland. The course will provide an overview of the geography of the Arctic Ocean including major ports, traditional travel and shipping routes; the history of Arctic maritime transport both Inuit and "outsider"; concepts of Arctic marine regions in Inuit/"outsider" culture; contemporary actors/stakeholders in the Arctic; Arctic maritime organizations, think tanks and key scholars; maritime transport situations or issues today; and, the policies and laws that govern the region.

Alfred Baird (instructor for module 1) is Professor of Maritime Business at Transport Research Institute (TRI), Edinburgh Napier University. His PhD concerned the study of strategic management in the global container shipping industry. He has a BA (Hons) degree in Business Studies and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport. Prior to his academic career he worked for a liner shipping company. With an emphasis on the ferry, container shipping and ports industry, Professor Baird has researched, published, advised, and taught across a range of subjects including: strategic management in maritime transport, shipping market and industry analysis, ship and port cost modeling, shipping service scheduling/planning, competition, privatization procurement and tendering of ports and shipping services, government policy, state subsidies, and assessing the feasibility of shipping services and port facilities.Nadine Fabbi (instructor for Module 2) is Associate Director of the Canadian Studies Center in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on the integration of indigenous diplomacies and international relations in the Arctic. Specifically her work addresses policy and spatial activism on the part of the Inuit in the Arctic region.
In 2010 she was awarded a Research Fellowship from University of the Arctic and the Government of Canada for her proposal, "Arctic Educational Policies and their Impact on Canada's Leadership Role in the Circumpolar World." In 2007 Nadine utilized a Government of Canada Faculty Research Grant, "Inuit Homelands in Canada" to design the first Task Force on the Arctic. In 2009 she was awarded a Program Enhancement Grant to take 13 University of Washington students to Ottawa as part of the first Task Force on Arctic Sovereignty co-taught with Professor Gallucci. This course is now offered in partnership with the Makivik Corporation from the Inuit region of Québec.
Nadine has travelled to Alaska, the Yukon, Churchill, Greenland, Iceland and Siberia and has taught two summer programs on Inuit homelands for the University of Alberta. In 2008 she was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the International Council for Canadian Studies in recognition of her contributions to Canadian Studies.
