The 2013 Icelandic course for Erasmus/Norplus students is being offered at the University Centre of the Westfjords, with funding through the respective agencies, represented by the Office of International Education. 

Course dates: August 5 - 23, 2013 

The University Centre's summer school for exchange students is an exciting summer course, in the magnificent surroundings of the remote Westfjords, and will prepare you for living and studying in Iceland.

This intensive beginners course in Icelandic language and culture is especially designed to meet the needs of students who plan to stay in Iceland for a semester or two. The course is held in cooperation with the Office of International Education (Erasmus and Nordplus National Agency) and with funding through Erasmus and Nordplus programmes. The course will prepare students for daily life in Iceland and participation in the university community. The course includes 96 hours of varied and interesting instruction, as well as exciting excursions and day trips in the vicinity of Ísafjörður.

The students will be taught basic Icelandic and vocabulary through lectures and exercises. They will also achieve reading and writing skills up to CEFR level A1-A2-B1, according to group level. Conversation exercises will include language games and problem-based learning in real situations. Pronunciation exercises will take many forms. The course also includes a visit to the sites of the Gísla Saga and a one-man play by actor Elfar Logi Hannesson.

Learning the language and culture will be the priority, a variety of interesting optional leisure programmes will also be offered (not included in the course fee). The course location is at Núpur which is a former boarding school,  surrounded by a beautiful natural setting; horse riding, canoeing, and hiking are just on your doorstep.

In Ísafjörður, students will enjoy discovering the town´s quaint bakeries, wandering the streets, and exploring the coastline.  In Ísafjörður they can go swimming, play golf and experience the beautiful nature all around.  Participating in everyday life in a small town in the countryside is an especially pleasant way to get a feeling for Icelandic society.

The University Centre of the Westfjords has several years of experience in hosting field schools for foreign students and offering courses in Icelandic language and culture. Also, the University Centre offers an international, cross disciplinary master's program in Coastal and marine management.
