Prerequisites, Textbooks, Levels

We expect that you have worked through the "Icelandic Online" one and two internet course on your own. Please calculate approximately 50 hours of work for the whole online course. It is accessible at www.icelandic.hi.is. Our course will build on this basic vocabulary and grammar. Please note that it is better to do the first three chapters diligently than to hurry through the whole course.

Students should themselves evaluate which course (Advanced 1 or 2) is more beneficial to their progress in learning Icelandic and mark their application accordingly. Note that on the first days of teaching students can be moved between the two courses after consulting with their teacher and the course project manager.

The course materials are provided by the teachers in the form of photocopies and other materials. The material is not included in the course fee, and will be available in the University Centre of the Westfjords on arrival for ISK 3,000. We expect you to bring your own basic dictionary. Basic dictionaries are also available in the local bookstore in Ísafjörður.

You will find the CEFR-standards under the following link: Common European Framework of References for Languages.

Our community

"Iceland is a place where the four elements seem to be engaged in a constant battle for dominance over the lives of its inhabitants. This provides an exciting, if sometimes demanding, backdrop to the CMM programme. It's hard to imagine an environment better suited to preparing students for the challenges of a career in natural resource management."

Alan Deverell, Great Britain, CMM student 2009-2010
