Welfare Watch counterbalance fund

In February 2009 the Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security appointed a steering committee to monitor the Welfare System, the ‘Welfare Watch'. The aim is to systematically monitor the social as well as the financial consequences of the bank failure and to propose measures to households. Numerous institutions and organisations who are engaged in the social-welfare sector participate in this work.

One of the proposals made by the The Welfare Watch is the foundation of a Welfare Watch counterbalance fund. The aims of this fund is to support research, projects carried out by the third sector and in the social-welfare sector and campaigns to assist specific groups.

The projects will terminate during 2010 or the first half of 2011 and grantees are obliged to hand in abstracts on their projects. These abstracts will be accessible on this website, in Icelandic and in English.

"Iceland is a place where the four elements seem to be engaged in a constant battle for dominance over the lives of its inhabitants. This provides an exciting, if sometimes demanding, backdrop to the CMM programme. It's hard to imagine an environment better suited to preparing students for the challenges of a career in natural resource management."

Alan Deverell, Great Britain, CMM student 2009-2010
