Academic Celebration

2010 heralds the first year that students graduate from the Master’s Program in Coastal and Marine Management taught at the University Centre in cooperation with the University of Akureyri. Formal graduation was at the University of Akureyri on June 12. The University Centre will celebrate the occasion in Hrafnseyri/Westfjords on June 17 – Iceland’s National Independence Day. It is an honour for the University Centre that the Minister of Education, Science and Culture as well as the rector of the University of Akureyri have accepted to attend. We hope to see as many friends of the University Centre as possible on this festive day.

Conference: The Wealth of Sea and Coast

The conference The Wealth of Sea and Coast: Initiatives, Innovation and the use of Cultural Heritage will be held in Ketilshús in Akureyri, Friday the 7th of May 2010 as part of the European Union Project Fishernet - Fishing Cultural Heritage Network. Environmentally Certified Westfjords

This Saturday, April 17, the Westfjords Tourist Association is hosting a conference called "Environmental Certified Westfjords", at Hótel Núpur by Dýrafjörður.

All further information is available on our Icelandic website, and on the website of the Westfjords Tourist Association.

The conference will be in Icelandic, except one talk by Leo Christensen, representative of employment affairs for Lolland commune in Denmark, who will talk about the rebuilding of the Lolland. To see at what time his talk is please click here.

Call for Participation and for Applications from Young Researchers

The 6th Open Assembly of the Northern Research Forum (NRF), Our Ice Dependent world, is to be held on October 24th - 27th, 2010 in Oslo and Kirkenes, Norway. The event is organized together with the 6th NRF Host Planning Committee. Young researchers and professionals who have passed their MA and plan to complete a doctoral degree or have recently completed a doctoral degree, are eligible to receive full or partial travel funding from the NRF in order to participate.

This week the students graduating from the Coastal and Marine Management master's program will present their master's projects. The presentations will be held at the University Centre but sent out via Skype since students, advisors and external readers are situated around the world. The presentations are open to the public and will be on Thursday and Friday in Room 1-2 at the University Centre.

The Icelandic Centre for Ethnology and Folklore will host a special Christmas talk on Saturday December 19, in Hólmavík. The program includes talks on folklore research, music and readings from new books by authors. The program will be in English, further information on the ICEF website www.icef.is.
